U.S. and Georgia History Exam Requirements

Georgia law requires that all candidates for a degree from an institution supported by public funds shall pass an examination upon the provision and principles of the following four areas:

How Can I Meet This Requirement?

Take a Class at 91ÁÔÆæ

At the University of North Georgia (91ÁÔÆæ) this requirement can be met by satisfactorily completing any one of the following courses:

  • POLS 1101
  • HIST 2111
  • HIST 2112

If you have taken one of these classes at a USG institution, you can transfer it in to meet the requirement.

Passing a test in each of the four areas:

  • History of the United States
  • History of Georgia
  • United States Constitution
  • Constitution of Georgia

Through Upper Level Work

Any baccalaureate student who has not met the legislative requirement, but has completed Area E, may use the following upper-level courses to meet the requirements listed below through coursework at the University of North Georgia:

  • Credit for U.S. history requirement: HIST 3150 or HIST 3151
  • Credit for Georgia history requirement: HIST 3182, HIST 3183, HIST 3184, or HIST 3185
  • Credit for Georgia constitution requirement: POLS 3106, POLS 4112, or POLS 4120

Transferring in from a Non-USG Institution or Received CLEP

If you transferred one or more of these courses into 91ÁÔÆæ from a private or out-of-state institution, you will have to take at least two exams to meet the mandated requirements as follows:

If you transferred in or received CLEP for:     You need to take the following exams:
  • POLS 1101 and,
  • HIST 2112 or 2111
  • Constitution of Georgia
  • History of Georgia
  • POLS 1101
  • Constitution of Georgia
  • History of Georgia
  • History of the United States
  • HIST 2111 or 2112
  • United States Constitution
  • Constitution of Georgia
  • History of Georgia
Note: Beginning fall 2023, students transferring in from a private Georgia institution may meet the Georgia history legislative requirement for approved institutions/courses recommended by the University System of Georgia. For the list of institutions/courses, please see the university undergraduate Catalog. If the institution or course is not listed, you will need to take the exam to meet the mandated requirement.

Taking the Exams

Who Administers These Exams?

The Testing Center, at four campus locations, administers these exams. The cost of the exam is $28. Subsequent attempts for the same exam will also be subject to the same exam fee. Students wishing to take an exam must make an appointment with the Testing Center.
