Strategic & Security Studies Major Phillip Ly Awarded Boren Scholarship

Phillip Ly, an undergraduate student in the PSIA Department, majoring in Strategic and Security Studies, recently received the and the . Ly, minoring in Japanese, applied for the scholarship with assistance from Dr. Anastasia Lin and Dr. Victoria Hightower from the Office on National Competitive Scholarships and his advisor from the Center for Global Engagement.
The Freeman Award provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.
The Boren Scholarship offers up to $20,000 to study abroad if your program is six months or longer. There is a federal service obligation to fill, which is two years to the government.
Earlier this year, Ly was also awarded the , and the .
Ly is taking classes at 91ÁÔÆæ this summer and fall. This summer he is taking a Japanese Special Topics course. In the fall, he will be resuming his major courses and other core classes.
He is most excited about returning to the Corps of Cadets in the fall.
