4.5 Faculty-Authored Academic Textbooks

A faculty member wishing to adopt a self-authored textbook for use in a University of North Georgia course must request a review of the text and approval by the “Textbook Review Committee” appointed by the dean in his/her college. The faculty member should send a letter of request and a copy of the textbook to the dean at least one semester prior to the proposed use of the text.

The dean will appoint committee members to include the department head/chair of the faculty member’s academic unit, and at least one other faculty member who is familiar with the academic content of the text. In the case of a dean or department head/chair authoring the book, then the dean would establish an alternative committee structure.

The committee will review the text and send a recommendation to the dean regarding approval to use the text in the faculty member’s class. The dean will communicate the decision to the faculty member and to the textbook review committee. Faculty may appeal the decision to the provost whose decision will be final and binding. In general, appeals will only be heard for cases involving alleged discrimination, procedural improprieties, or violations of academic freedom.
