Academics at Summer Honors

Summer Honors provides collegiate level academics focused on authentic undergraduate research experiences to help prepare attendees for college. Our program works with outstanding University of North Georgia (91ÁÔÆæ) faculty members to provide challenging, college-level content that is accessible to high school students.

New and diverse academic sessions are offered each year that showcase the best of 91ÁÔÆæ and immerse our students in a snapshot of a true college experience. We employ faculty and staff from across our campuses to offer both field and classroom experiences in a wide range of disciplines. Our academics inspire interest in college, offer an overview of a diversity of programs and career options, and suggest how students might integrate these courses or pathways into future endeavors.

Past sessions have included:

  • Controversial Topics in Criminal Justice
  • Class Structure in the US and the Social Register
  • Epidemiology and Cholera
  • Field Techniques of Wildlife Conservation
  • Data Science and Personality
  • How to Make a Difference in Your Communities
  • Chinese Opera
  • Politics is Everywhere
  • Media Analysis and Literacy
  • Microbiology through Cheese
  • Paleontology

College Writing Program

Because strong leaders communicate effectively, Summer Honors includes a College Writing component, which offers instruction in writing, editing, and refining college essays. Our academic instructors provide detailed feedback to our students about how to hone their writing skills for essays, personal statements and future college and/or scholarship applications.

The essay topics include leadership themes from our curriculum and experiences at Summer Honors to create a synergistic partnership between the Summer Honors academic experience and our adventure-learning leadership program.

Academic Achievements

Academic progress is tracked through a variety of individual and team assessments. Awards are presented at the Awards Night Banquet. Each year, the Summer Honors Most Outstanding Student earns a $2,500 scholarship to attend 91ÁÔÆæ and automatic enrollment in the 91ÁÔÆæ Honors Program.

The Most Outstanding Student award requires a student to perform at or near the top in multiple Academic awards categories as well as multiple Leadership awards categories.
