Applied Gerontology (NEX)

The Nexus degree in Applied Gerontology produces career ready graduates to meet the diverse, multifaceted workforce needs to support Georgia’s growing older adult population. 

Three baccalaureate level course provide a deep knowledge of the context of aging, communication with older adults, and offer a gerontology elective of your choice. Three robust Practicums in a broad array or organizations and businesses (anywhere in the State of Georgia) will prepare you for employment upon graduation.

Graduates are likely to be employed in healthcare, social and community support positions, educational and cultural organization and businesses, tourism, travel, leisure, and recreational services and businesses.

Note: You will register at the Associate tuition rate and are entitled to enroll in 18 credits at the upper division (3000 and 4000 level) while paying Associate level tuition rates.

The Institute for Healthy Aging is nationally recognized by the Gerontological Society of America and the Academy for Gerontology in Higher Education.

Our nationally recognized faculty are from multiple colleges and departments that include: English, Human Services, Kinesiology, Psychology, and Sociology.

  • Georgia has the 11th fastest-growing 60+ population in the US between 2010-2030 (114%).
  • Employment in services and business that serve older adults is predicted to grow rapidly throughout the region to support the rapidly growing older adult population.
  • Courses taken to complete the Nexus Degree in Applied Gerontology can be used to fulfill the requirements for future baccalaureate degrees Areas A-E and a minor or other elective courses (a few exceptions do apply).

Notice Regarding Online Offerings

Residents of the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands can take 91ÁÔÆæ distance education courses. For details about State Authorizations, professional licensure and certification, and state reciprocity agreements, visit the State Authorizations page. All other inquiries should be addressed to the academic department offering the online program.

International applicants who will require F-1 status to attend 91ÁÔÆæ may not apply for part-time programs (less than nine hours fall and spring semesters) and are allowed only one online class per term to count towards full-time enrollment.
