Why Study French

French is spoken by over 220 million people around the world, of which about 80 million of them are non-native speakers. French is spoken as a native or official language in 55 countries and it is the only language in the world that that is spoken as such on five continents. French and English are the only languages taught in every country in the world. It is estimated that by 2050, there will be 700 million French speakers, and 80% of them will be of African origin.

France's cultural and political influences are global. France's vast history carries influence in education, cuisine, fashion, dance, theater, literature, sculpture, painting, architecture, technology, and the military arts around the globe. This is why France is the world's number one tourist destination, with Paris receiving more than 50 million visitors per year.

French is an important language in medicine. Inserm and aeronautics (70% of the world's satellites are launched by the French company Ariane - the world's first commercial space services provider). French-speaking scientists’ and technicians’ inventions and discoveries are as varied as photography, cinema, canned foods, braille, pasteurization, pencil sharpeners, the stethoscope, the chip on your credit/debit card, aspirin, and velcro.
