Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl

The Regional Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl Competition is a one-day, multi-institutional collegiate competition held in partnership with the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE). Learn more about the Mid-Atlantic Regional Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl Competition being held at the University of North Georgia's Gainesville campus.

What is the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl?

Hundreds of college students in teams across the United States and Canada compete in 10 Regional Ethics Bowl competitions each fall. The teams argue and defend their moral assessment of some of the most troubling and complex ethical issues facing society today. Questions address a wide array of topics in business and professional ethics, in personal relationships, and in social and political affairs. The competition focuses on selected cases developed by the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics.

In the competitions, students demonstrate their ability to:

  • understand the facts of the case;
  • understand principles involved in the case;
  • present an effective argument on how the case should be resolved;
  • and, respond effectively to challenges put forth by the opposing teams as well as the panel of expert judges.

Former Ethics Bowl students consider this one of their most important college activities and one that they carry forward into their professional and personal lives.

How do I get involved?

In order to participate in the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl team at 91ÁÔÆæ, students must be part of the course BUSA 3950: Business Ethics & Corporate Social Responsibility. This case study-driven course requires students to analyze a variety of complex business situations and to form and justify plausible alternatives that reflect ethical concepts, concern for multiple stakeholder groups and a range of decision-making criteria, processes and outcomes.

The truist Center for Ethical Leadership proudly supports the 91ÁÔÆæ Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl Team.

Ethics & Eggs

The truist Center for Ethical Leadership supports the Ethics & Eggs breakfast meetings to provide a venue for critical-thinking around ethical dilemmas, bringing together students, faculty, staff and the business community to gain different ethical perspectives into solutions.

These events also support the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl (IEB) team by allowing the team to perform in front of a room of their peers and receive critical feedback to help them at competition. Typically during the Ethics & Eggs event, students on the IEB team are presented with sample cases that they may see at regional competition and are asked to respond to questions in front of both students and selected group of panelists from the area business community.

During these events, the truist Center for Ethical Leadership may also bring in key speakers around the related topics of ethics and/or ethical leadership.
