Nigel Cares: All play a role in campus safety

April 11, 2022
All 91ÁÔÆæ students, faculty and staff can play an active role in connecting themselves and others to support and keeping 91ÁÔÆæ's campus community safe.

By Chelsea Story, case manager, Dean of Students Office

To promote student success and ensure the safety of our campus community, the University of North Georgia (91ÁÔÆæ) has two referral systems of which you should be aware: and .

Understanding the purpose of these reporting forms will help you play an active role in connecting yourself and others to support and keeping 91ÁÔÆæ's campus community safe. Ultimately, identifying, referring, and reporting students who are struggling or who may pose a risk to themselves or the community is a responsibility that we must all share.

The Flight Support form is a tool to assist 91ÁÔÆæ's Care and Outreach team in the Dean of Students Office to identify and assist any student who is experiencing challenges by providing them with the support they need to navigate difficult or hardship circumstances. The Flight Support form collects information to understand the reason for the referral so that we may gain insight into how we can best support the student prior to making contact.

Once the student is reached, the goal is to gather information to extend appropriate recommendations and resource referrals. Support really can make the difference between success and failure.

So if you or a student you know is struggling at 91ÁÔÆæ, make the referral today! Learn more about our Care & Outreach team here.

The See Something/Say Something reporting form was created to foster student, faculty, and staff well-being, as well as campus safety, by facilitating the identification and support of individuals who demonstrate behaviors that may be early warning signs of possible troubled, disruptive, or violent behavior. What does that mean?  Well, in general, any behavior that disrupts the learning environment (excluding minor classroom management issues) or causes concern for a student's well-being should be reported.

You will find specific examples of self-destructive and disruptive behaviors on our Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) page. Ultimately, this reporting form is used to help the BIT gather information about students, faculty, or staff in distress, which then informs the development of a plan to appropriately respond and support them. For emergencies involving an imminent risk of harm to self or others please dial 911 or call Public Safety at 706-864-1500.

Please familiarize yourself with the and and refer as necessary because we depend on your help to identify students in need of support and to keep 91ÁÔÆæ's campus community safe!

Grief can give people the opportunity to process their feelings in order to celebrate life. This allows individuals to heal. It permits time to focus on the positive influences a loved one had on a person's life.

It is important to watch for the signs of unhealthy relationships so we can offer assistance. Offering support without judgment and connecting people with resources are helpful steps.
