Gov. Brian Kemp has named University of North Georgia (91ÁÔÆæ) alumna Angela Duncan to fill the 11th seat on Gwinnett County Superior Court bench.

Duncan's appointment comes after serving as the Gwinnett County Magistrate Court Judge and chief judge for the City of Chamblee Municipal Court. She earned her law degree at John Marshall Law School and her bachelor's degree in criminal justice from 91ÁÔÆæ.

Duncan also served in the U.S. Army Reserves from March 1987 to March 1995 as a light-weight vehicle mechanic. The Lawrenceville, Georgia, resident attributes her success to her time at 91ÁÔÆæ and in the U.S. Army.

"I was able to prepare for my future, be a leader, and I never hesitated to ask questions and navigate through any difficulties," she said. "I attribute a lot of my success to North Georgia and the military."

Openly gay, Duncan wants other members of the LGBTQ community to know that they can be themselves and still strive for success.

"I have always been open about who I am.  My wife and children have accompanied me and are a huge part of my success," she said. "Even when faced with adversity, I would soldier on, just be who I am and not allow other people's views to affect who I am."
