Dr. Ellen Best, assistant professor of accounting at the University of North Georgia (91ÁÔÆæ), co-authored about how companies should use Twitter when releasing financial information such as earnings. She and Dr. Marcus L. Caylor, associate professor of accounting at Kennesaw State University, delved into the benefits and risks of information put on Twitter.
"This is an area that is going to continue to become more important," Best said. "It's not going away."
Handled properly, sharing earnings on Twitter can help a company's stock price, according to Best and Caylor. They found this social media presence can lead to increased exposure for smaller companies who hope to reach more potential investors.
Best said one of the main risks is violation of Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulations if companies are not careful in their social media posts. One such example was Elon Musk's tweets about possibly taking Tesla public that the SEC deemed "misleading."
