For the first time in program history, the No. 27 University of North Georgia (91ÁÔÆæ) women's tennis team will be headed to the NCAA Sweet 16 in Surprise, Arizona, after beating two higher-ranked teams in the Southeast Regional Tournament.
91ÁÔÆæ first defeated No. 21 Georgia College and State University in a close 5-4 match in the first round on April 28. The next day, 91ÁÔÆæ upset No. 15 Wingate University in the second round to earn entry in the NCAA Sweet 16.
This is the first time a 91ÁÔÆæ tennis team has advanced beyond the regional round. Now, the Nighthawks will travel to Surprise for the NCAA Championships from May 8-11. The remaining 16 teams will be placed in a new bracket with the top four teams seeded and the remaining 12 put in through a blind draw.
The NCAA ranked 91ÁÔÆæ as the sixth seed in the Southeast Regional Tournament. It marked the second time the women's tennis program earned a post-season position in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
