P. Clay Rowell, professor and department head of counseling at the University of North Georgia, believes the world has become focused more on the outcome than the journey of life. That also applies to the sphere of counseling.

"It becomes easy to focus on what we are doing and less on how we are doing it," he said.

Rowell's new book, "Processing the Process in Counseling and Counselor Education: Art, Skills, and Applications," aims to help counselors and counseling educators flip the focus to the how and why of counseling instead of the what.

Rowell said counselors and professors may utilize his book as complementary material to a textbook in their classroom. He explained the e-book features techniques through video demonstrations for professors to use.

For example, in the individual counseling chapter, six video clips are of a counselor demonstrating on how to focus on the process in a particular moment, Rowell said.

"If we can teach counselors about focusing on process in their counseling relationships, then they can in turn better help clients," he said.
