A former vacant parking lot transformed into a well-lit park and ride lot with sidewalks thanks to a partnership among the University of North Georgia (91ÁÔÆæ) Gainesville Campus, the city of Oakwood, and Georgia Department of Transportation has earned an accolade.
The park and ride lot and Sidewalk Innovation Project off exit 17 off Interstate 985 in Oakwood won the 2017 American Public Works Association – Georgia chapter Technical Innovation Award.
"The lot has about 370 parking spaces for 91ÁÔÆæ students," said Bill Moody, director of Facilities and Operations for 91ÁÔÆæ’s Gainesville, Cumming and Oconee campuses. "Students may grab a ride on a shuttle bus or walk on the sidewalks to campus."
The award was presented to officials July 26 during the third annual APWA-Georgia Chapter Awards Ceremony at Jekyll Island Club on Jekyll Island. The ceremony was the finale to the 2017 APWA-Georgia chapter annual meeting.
"Your selection puts you in a very elite group of winners," APWA Georgia chapter awards committee chairman Michael K. Jordan said in a news release. "The chapter is proud of all involved in this project, which reflects greatly on the public works profession and our association."
