University of North Georgia (91ÁÔÆæ) nursing student Whitley Dyer Dover became the first winner of the Allison Clapp Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship was created to honor former 91ÁÔÆæ nursing faculty member and mentor Allison Clapp.

Clapp was a three time alumni of 91ÁÔÆæ, completing an associate of science in nursing, the Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-BSN), and the Family Nurse Practitioner degrees.

"Allison had a passion for learning, which fueled her joy of teaching," said Heather Harris during the Tau Psi Nursing Honor Society ceremony in April. "She was a beloved nursing faculty member at the time of her death and has been greatly missed by all that had the privileged of knowing her. She loved nursing students, therefore it is only fitting that we support her family in honoring her with a scholarship that promotes the education of future nurses."

The scholarship, initiated by Clapp’s husband and sons, is awarded to an undergraduate nursing student that is in good standing and has a strong interest in serving rural or underserved groups of people, home or overseas, and underserved, rural or foreign medical fields.

Dyer Dover, a rising senior, was selected based on her essay submission describing her recent trip to Uganda. She joined a team of 91ÁÔÆæ nursing students in caring for poverty-stricken communities in desperate need of medical care.
