Concerned about finding a job? Learn from Jennifer Taylor’s success story…

What kinds of things did you do while in college to prepare you for your professional life after college, or to make yourself more marketable?

I studied abroad, interned with the Center for Global Engagement, and majored in History with a minor in International Affairs. My degree in History taught me how to be an effective researcher, analytical thinker, and skilled communicator– these are all highly transferable and marketable skills across the board.

How did you hear about (or find) your current position?

I researched the best travel agencies in Atlanta, which led me to a series of articles about Brownell. I was very impressed with the company and knew after reading them that I wanted to work for them. So, I did some more research, sent in a resume, followed up with them (turns out they never received my resume), and several interviews later- I landed my dream job!

What advice would you like to give to current students to help prepare them for careers and/or the job search after college?

I would advise students to not give up, be picky, and utilize 91ÁÔÆæ’s career services’ office. I applied for jobs for many months before I landed the one. It’s a long and sometimes frustrating process, but it helps to think of it as looking for your dream job instead of just any job. When I first started looking, I still wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my degree. I thought I would work with a non-profit International Exchange organization, but things fell through. I felt discouraged when this happened and started applying for jobs that I was overqualified for. It was during this time that I discovered Brownell and I’m so glad I didn’t accept any of those other jobs because my position at Brownell fits my abilities and desires perfectly! I also know that I would not have been able to impress such a prestigious agency without the help of career services. I constantly nagged Elena Comperatore with questions about how to interview, and what I should do if…, and what the protocol was for certain situations, etc. She was so helpful and always got back to me quickly. When the final interview for Brownell came, I was confident. I know I have Elena to thank for that.
